Planet Coolerthanyou

Impact

The collision was unavoidable, the comet was huge and the consequences were devastating. Virtually all life on Earth disappeared as a direct result of the impact, the rest soon after as impenetrable dust clouds blocked sunlight for over a decade.

We'd seen it coming though, and whilst there was nothing that could be done to stop the collision, we did have a back-up plan. The smartest scientists and engineers available built a new planet. A shiny, metal bolthole for the last million survivors. It became probably man's finest achievement, a stunning miracle of design and construction, all built in space and capable of sustaining human life indefinitely. Those who didn't win the survival lottery had their DNA stored for possible future use. Earth may not have survived, but we did.

Brave new world

With limited space and resources, things are very different on Planet CTY. There are no animals or plants, and the outdoors, as we know it simply doesn't exist. The need to limit population meant a total removal of reproductive capability. So no families or marriages, just a new batch of children cloned every 10 years to maintain the equilibrium. If you can avoid accidents and serious illness you get 75 years on Planet CTY and that's your lot. On the bright side at least you get to plan your own funeral and have the mother of all parties the night before your big day.

A huge canal of dark matter provides energy to power the planet and divides it neatly into a large mainland and a small island. Without the family unit for stability two main groups of people emerged on Planet CTY; 'mainlanders' and 'islanders'.

Follow me, follow you

Mainlanders are followers; they look the same, think the same and dress the same. They all buy the same food, clothes and music. Uniformity is everything, one big tribe of clones taking comfort in a collective blandness. Their life_pods are uniformly sparse and their communal areas are quiet and orderly. To be honest it's a pretty dull place, although they're happy enough.

Dream a little dream

Things are different on the island though, where individuality is encouraged and respected. Islanders have dreams and pursue them; try new experiences, create new things and share ideas. They think for themselves, make their own decisions and generally have a lot more fun.

For years the islanders have shared a collective dream. They wanted to come home. The mainlanders thought it was impossible and to be honest, "a little bit stupid". Without dreams though, what else is there?

The islanders really missed Planet Earth and all the things they couldn't do anymore. Breathing real air for start, feeling the sun on their face and the wind in their hair. They miss being part of a real family and travelling the world visiting friends and making new ones. The 'great outdoors' seems even more appealing when it doesn't exist.

So the one thing common to most Islanders was a dream of breaking out from their metal world and getting back to the Earth they remember. Impossible means nothing to them and eventually they found a way to come back. A group of brilliant dreamers and visionaries found a way to travel through time and get back to Earth before the devastating impact of the comet obliterated life.

Forward to the past

They came back to today and they've been coming back for years. Generations of islanders have now travelled back and are enjoying themselves on our beautiful planet.

The time travel experience blurs a lot of their memory of Planet CTY. What is left though, is a very strong sense of why they are here. They know exactly what to do on planet Earth - have fun and experience all the things they've never been able to do before.

So they enjoy life and live it to the full. They walk and run, climb and fall, laugh and cry, explore and dream. They embrace everything this wonderful world has to offer. They want to experience things for themselves; so they climb mountains and swim rivers, play sport or watch it live rather than on television.

They don't just listen to music - they find new music or make it themselves. Some tackle the biggest challenges of all; they get married and raise families, happy loving families with a lust for life.

They make the most of every single day and enjoy it as much as they can for what it is - an opportunity to exist.

Life style fashion

We'd like to think if they were here they'd be wearing Coolerthanyou. Not for them the repetitive High Street shops all selling the same average quality stuff, they leave that for any mainlanders who've sneaked along. As freethinking, active individuals they would search out independent producers who care about what they are doing.

They need high quality clothes to support their lifestyle. Sooner or later they'd find us or someone would point them in our direction. Instantly they would understand what we're trying to do here at Coolerthanyou.

You may not have come from the future, but if you live life to the full and are confident enough to make your own decisions and follow your dreams, then who knows? Either way, like the islanders you need clothes to match your lifestyle and personality. You need clothes that will go the distance and stay looking good on your journey through life.
